Mothers' Side of Our Family Tree

The Lewis family, pioneers of eastern Tennessee and the Indiana territory.

This article is part 1 of a series about the travels of my family across the country and around the world.

The historical records these articles are based on were found in family Bible records, deeds, diaries, histories or court records of the places mentioned. I hope the interested readers and future generations of our family will appreciate the history of our Pioneer Ancestors.

Sorting Out Your Genealogical Mess

Is your workspace totally over run with stacks of paper? Dining table buried in "proof" and "evidence" from your family history research? If so, you are not alone. We all know getting our foot in the door is the hardest part. So, where do you start?

Big to Small

Of course, it would be nice to know exactly where every single piece of paper should go, right off the bat, but it is totally unrealistic. Sorting every individual page all at once will leave you in a mess worse than what you started with and feeling bogged down and totally overwhelmed. Instead, we're going to start big and work toward the smaller, detailed organization. What the heck does that mean? In the same way it can seem daunting to fulfill a huge goal (i.e. lose weight) it can be daunting to take on a huge project like organization. So, we combat this by breaking it off into bite sized chunks that we can do in our spare time, here or there. Come up with a way to break up your research into about four groups. One method might be to use the surname of each grandparent (each of your grandfathers' surnames and your grandmothers' maiden names). There are other ways to break it up, but generally speaking, this is a good division point.

The Origin of Surnames

We didn't always have a surname; indeed it's still the norm in some countries such as Burma for people not to have a surname. But in other countries, surnames gradually became a necessity as the population increased, to help differentiate family members and other people living in the same community. In the United Kingdom this happened around the time of the Norman Conquest.

Ways to Stay Entertained in Church
David had bought some apple trees from a man by the name of Thomas Harvey, who had a nursery west of Back Creek Meeting House. He had agreed to pay for them in the harvest, so when the time came, David sent his sons to do the work.

Who Was Richard III?

Historians and genealogists have been much excited in the last couple of weeks by the confirmation that the skeleton found underneath a car park in Leicester is that of King Richard III. But who was Richard III, why was he under a car park and what can this find tell us about this much maligned king?

Photo Booths And Photo Booth Hire

Let's face it, unless you come one of the darkest corners of the earth, you will surely have seen photo booths melbourne countless times in your life. Admittedly, they might not be as popular now as they were in the past, but you do however still see them.

A decade or so ago, they were literally everywhere. Not only were they plentiful in shopping malls and etc, but one would also often seem them in building where people go for things like passports and so on. Despite a massive leap forward in terms of technology, I don't think any can compete with photo booths as far as convenience is concerned. Also, the booths of today are a far cry from those of yesteryear.

Unlike before, the booths of today also allow users to take advantage of many different special effects. Have your face in the center of a heart, or maybe surrounded by flowers or even butterflies. Have yourself pictured with an elephant, a lion, or whatever other animal takes your fancy. If you aren't very keen on getting a regular set of prints, then you can also select the "sticker" option. It seems as though the range of options you have when you step into one of these booths just continues to increase all the time.

Pinoy Newspapers in LA California PinoyWatchDog

Last December 23,2012, alumni members of Lourdes School Quezon City, together with some family members and friends, gathered at the Union Rescue Mission | The Way Home in downtown LA - a family center providing food, clothing and shelter to the less fortunate. URM is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving men, women, and children experiencing homelessness. It was established in 1891 and is currently the oldest and one of the largest rescue missions of its kind in the United States.

The group acted as volunteers in support of the organization's slogan, We embrace people experiencing homelessness with the compassion of Christ - giving hope and healing for a changed life - helping them find their way home.

The team, consisting of fifteen members, called this project Operation Gratitude which aimed to share time and service to those in need. The members fully realized that despite the trials that may have come our way, we are still blessed and should share with the less fortunate and the homeless our time to give them hope for a happier life.
